Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kanji Stories?
Kanji Stories is a Japanese learning app that helps you remember each kanji through memorable stories, intuitive writing practice, and smart review scheduling. It’s designed to make learning fast and enjoyable.
How is Kanji Stories different from other kanji learning apps?
Unlike rote memorization apps, Kanji Stories engages both your imagination and motor memory.
You draw kanji to reinforce stroke order.
You remember them through creative stories that tie meaning together.
You review them through a probabilistic spaced repetition system (SRS) that adapts naturally. No missed reviews piling up.
What is a “probabilistic SRS”?
It’s a smarter review system inspired by how real memory works.
Instead of fixed schedules, each kanji’s chance of appearing is based on how well you know it so that your weakest characters show up more often, and reviews never overwhelm you.
Do I need an account to start using the app?
No. You can start studying right away.
What do I get with the premium version?
Premium users gain access to:
Aggregate statistics (XP, streaks, study time, review counts)
The full constellation map of all kanji
Cloud sync across devices
Early access to new stories
How many kanji does the app cover?
Currently, Kanji Stories covers over 2,000 common-use (Jōyō) kanji, including their meanings and readings. More advanced and rare kanji will be added over time.
Is Kanji Stories suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. The app introduces kanji gradually, starting with simpler characters and their building blocks (radicals). Each new kanji connects to what you’ve already learned, so you build understanding layer by layer.
Can I use the app offline?
Yes. All kanji data and your progress are stored locally for fast access.
When online, your progress can sync automatically to the cloud.
What platforms are supported?
Kanji Stories is currently available on Android and iOS. Data syncing works seamlessly between devices using the same account.
